Sunday night Hanna had a few stomache cramps.. Nothing major… We just kept an eye on her. Monday, late morning her stomache cramps became more severe. I tried to get her to lay down and rest. Gave her some gravol. Hubby came home right around 4 pm, her cramps were not getting any better. So I looked a few things up online, thinking it might be her appendix. So I decided to take her to the hospital. She has never had any problems since she came home from the hospital shortly after she was born. She was born with her large and small intestines (bowel) outside of her body (gastroschisis).
Anyway, we got to the ER and didn’t have to wait long. The doctor there checked her out and sent her for x-rays. She came back soon after she got the results and told me what she thought it was and that she called the Surgical team down to see Hanna. Both Surgeons looked her over and talked to me about what the possibilities were and what to do.
1. being that they hook her up to pain meds and IV fluids and wait to see if the bowel started to untangle itself.
2. If Hanna got sick again they would put a tube down her nose into her belly and suck all the acids and contents out waiting another 24 hours to see if that helped.
3. Finally if nothing else worked they would take her to the OR and operate.
She was admitted to the Children’s Hospital right away, morphine and gravol were given, she was Not to eat or drink for 24 hours. The next morning they sent her back for x-rays. All looked well and she could slowly start back on clear fluids only. She was doing so well that she could have unclear fluids later that evening. This morning she was doing even better and the Surgeon was happy with that, he ordered her some real food for breakfast. The next few days she is to drink lots of fluids and and only eat soft food.
I am very happy she did not have to go for surgery. As the Surgeon said, there is always a chance that this bowel obstruction can happen again and again, and maybe next time she might not be so lucky as for it to correct itself. She may have to have surgery.
So miss Hanna is doing good, she is happy to be back at home.
She did have quite the visit at the hospital though. She went to art class and played bingo. They have something every evening and every afternoon for the kids to do there. It kind of feels more like a resort then a hospital for sick kids.
We are incredibly lucky to have the Alberta Children’s hospital right in our back yard!
